Pocas veces se tiene la oportunidad de interactuar con personajes tan polifacéticos como Aaron, por lo que aprovechamos su reciente visita a Panamá para que nos compartiera un poco sobre su vida y amor por los deportes en exteriores, él es todo un ejemplo a seguir.

¿Qué le trajo a Panamá y cómo fue su estadía?
Visito Panamá con regularidad, pero este viaje en particular fue para asistir a la inauguración oficial de la marca Merrell y de la apertura de su nueva tienda en el Mall Multiplaza.

What brought you to Panama and how was your stay?
I visit regularly, but this particular trip was to attend the official inauguration of the Merrell brand in conjunction with the opening of the new Merrell Store.

¿Qué le distingue de otros?
Me gustaría ser modesto al respecto, pero eso no sería una respuesta justa a la pregunta. He estado muy involucrado con el deporte y el outdoors toda mi vida. En muchos casos, eran intercambiables. También soy un músico; la música es mi fuente favorita de meditación y de creatividad.

What distinguishes you from other people?
I like to start with modesty, but that wouldn’t be a fair answer to the question. I’ve been highly involved with both athletics and the outdoors my entire life. In many cases, they were interchangeable. I’m also a musician. Music is my meditation and favorite source of creativity.

¿Dónde creció, y cómo fue su infancia?
Crecí en Pennsylvania en un barrio de clase social media-baja en las afueras de Filadelfia, un lugar difícil para crecer. El fútbol (americano) fue mi objetivo durante todo el camino hasta la universidad. Me mantuvo enfocado y me ayudó a mantenerme al margen de todas esas influencias negativas que puedes obtener al crecer en un lugar como en el que crecí. También pagó por mi educación universitaria en su mayor parte. Dicho esto, quería ser muchas cosas cuando crecía y casualmente, todavía estoy trabajando en algunas de ellas.

Where did you grow up and how was your childhood?
I grew up in Pennsylvania in middle to lower class neighborhood outside of Philadelphia. It was a tough place to grow up. For me, Football (American) was the focus of my life all the way through college. It kept me focused and helped me to steer clear of all of those negative influences that can get the best of you when you grow up in place like I did. It also paid for my college education for the most part. That being said, I wanted to be a lot of things when I grew up, and coincidentally, I’m still working on some of those.

¿Qué deportes practica?
Además del fútbol, estaba en casi todos los deportes que puedan imaginar. El atletismo, béisbol, lucha libre, baloncesto, la mayoría de los deportes de equipo que se ofrecen en la escuela. También pasé un montón de tiempo corriendo en trillos, esquí, ciclismo de montaña y excursionismo, todo los cuales aún practico. Hay un gran amante de la naturaleza en mí. Estoy más centrado en carreras de montaña en este momento, porque creo que estoy en un buen momento físicamente para poder empezar a ganar algunas carreras nuevamente.

What sports did you practice?
Besides football, I was in almost every sport you could imagine. Track and field, baseball, wrestling, basketball, most of the team sports offered in school. I also spent a lot of time trail running, skiing, mountain biking, and backpacking, all of which I still do. This is the outdoorsman in me. I’m most focused on trail running right now, because I think I’m in a good place physically where I can start winning some races again.

¿Qué le motivó a entrar en el mundo del deporte?
Para mí, esto sería una respuesta multifacética. Fuera de mi amor por la competencia, crecí con una madre que tenía una enfermedad debilitante (esclerosis múltiple) y ella no podía, ni puede actualmente, hacer muchas de las cosas que desea porque está muy limitada físicamente. Me enorgullece ser capaz de encontrar lo positivo de una situación, sin importar lo difícil o malo que ésta sea, por lo que fue esencialmente una bendición para mí en cuanto a mi nivel de ambición y motivación. Quería fomentar cada regalo físico que tenía, y asegurarme de maximizar mi oportunidad de crecer como atleta.

What motivated you to engage in sport activities?
For me, this would be a multi-faceted answer. Outside of my love of competition, I grew up with a mother who had a debilitating disease. My mom has Multiple Sclerosis, and she couldn’t and still can’t do many of things that she wanted to do, because she was very limited physically. I pride myself in being able to realize a positive in a situation no matter how hard or bad it is, so this was essentially a blessing in disguise for me in regards to my level of ambition and motivation. I wanted to foster every physical gift I had, and ensure that I was maximizing my opportunity to grow as an athlete.

¿Cuáles consideras son sus principales logros?
Conseguir una beca para jugar al fútbol en la universidad es probablemente el logro más importante de mi vida. Me abrió todo tipo de oportunidades de otra forma mis padres no hubiesen podido pagar mi carrera universitaria. También me gustaría decir que haber sido promovido en este trabajo ha sido una ventaja importante. Siempre había querido viajar por América Latina, y ahora alguien me está pagando para hacerlo, y para vender un producto por el cual soy apasionado pues era un gran fan Merrell antes de empezar a trabajar para la marca.

What do you think are your greatest accomplishments?
Getting a scholarship to play football in college is probably the most important accomplishment in my life. It opened all kinds of opportunities for me, and otherwise, my parents would not have been able to afford tuition to send me to school. I would also say being promoted into this job has been a major bonus. I’ve always wanted to travel Latin America, and now someone is paying me to do it, and to sell a product that I can be passionate about. I was huge Merrell fan before I started working for the brand.

¿Cuán seguido entrena?
Estoy activo casi 7 días de la semana, voy al gimnasio para entrenar con pesas, juego al baloncesto un par de veces a la semana, y vivo en el bosque, así que puedo hacer todas las actividades al aire libre que me encanta hacer, justo afuera mi puerta trasera. La parte difícil es tomar tiempo libre, que cual también es importante. Solía hacer entrenamiento personal y coaching, pero mi tiempo es limitado, así que ahora me enfoco en mí mismo.

How often do you train?
I am active nearly 7 days a week. I go to the gym for weight training. I play basketball a couple times a week, and I live in the woods, so I get to do all of the outdoor activities I love to do, right out my back door. The hard part is taking time off, which is also important. I used to do some personal training, and coaching, but my time is limited, so I now focus on myself.

¿Algún evento o reto próximo en el cual está interesado en participar?
Actualmente estoy entrenando para una serie de carreras de pista que se darán este verano. Como ya mencioné, me gustaría ganar algunas medallas esta temporada.

Are you preparing for a coming up challenge?
I’m currently training for a series of trail races this summer. As mentioned earlier, I’d like to win some medals this season.

¿Qué nos puede decir de su profesión?
Paso mi tiempo entre Rockford, MI donde tiene su sede la empresa, Portland, Oregon, donde están nuestras oficinas ropa, y toda América del Sur, Centroamérica, Méjico y el Caribe. Me encanta experimentar todas las culturas únicas de las regiones que visito. Es gratificante en muchos niveles. Soy Director de ventas y estoy a cargo de la distribución en estos mercados, pero lo más importante, soy un consultor para nuestros distribuidores y marcas. También manejo la línea de productos, lo que puede ser retador, ya que los estilos y tendencias de consumo pueden ser diferentes de un país a otro, y necesito asegurarme de que estamos cumpliendo sus necesidades en la medida de lo posible con los recursos disponibles.

What can you tell us about your profession?
I spend my time between Rockford, MI where our company is based, Portland, Oregon where our apparel offices are, and all over South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. I really love to experience all of the different unique cultures of the regions I visit. It’s fulfilling on many levels. I’m a Sales Director and am in charged of managing our distribution in these markets, but most importantly, I’m a consultant for both our distributors, and our brands. In regards to difficulty, I also manage the product line, which can be challenging, because the styles and consumer tendencies can be different from country to country, and I need to make sure we are fulfilling as many needs as possible with the resources available.

¿Cómo se siente al trabajar para una compañía ligada al deporte?
Es un sueño hecho realidad.

How do you feel working for a company linked sports?
It’s a dream come true.

¿Cómo balancea el trabajo con su pasión por el deporte?
A medida que he recibido más responsabilidades en mi carrera, encontrar el tiempo para hacer todas las cosas que amo se ha vuelto más difícil, y no hace falta decir que no hay suficientes horas en el día para hacer todo lo que quiero, pero esto me mantiene entretenido y emocionado, porque siempre habrá algo más que hacer.

How do you balance work with your passion for sports?
As I’ve been given more responsibility in my career, finding the time to do all of the things I love has become more challenging, and it goes without saying that there are not enough hours in a day to do everything I want to do, but this keeps my fun and exciting, because there will always be something more to do.

Cuéntenos de su vida familiar
Mi esposa Jackie, también trabaja para Merrell, lo ha hecho en diferentes áreas; sin embargo su puesto actual le ha dado la oportunidad de ser la Directora de Productos para la categoría de estilo de vida activo de nuestra marca (Casuals). No tenemos hijos, eso tal vez sea porque todavía soy un niño grande. En cualquier caso, estamos pensando en ello, y espero con ansias el próximo capítulo de mi vida.

Can you tell us how your family life is?
My wife, Jackie Brown also works for Merrell. She has worked in many different capacities with the company, but her most recent promotion has given her the opportunity to be the Product Director for the Active Lifestyle category of our brand (Casuals). We don’t currently have any children, but maybe that’s because I’m still a big kid. In either event, we are planning on it, and I look forward to the next chapter in my life.

¿A quién admira y por qué?
Hay muchos, pero admiro a un músico llamado Trey Anastasio porque él encarna todo lo que me gusta de la creatividad e improvisación. No hay nada que me guste más que ver a alguien empujar los límites de la creatividad.

Who do you admire and why?
There are so many, but I am most fond of a musician. His name is Trey Anastasio, and he embodies everything I love about creativity and improvisation. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching someone push the limits of creativity.
