Circuit training combines cardiovascular exercises and resistance training. It is believed to be one of the most effective methods of training because it helps to strengthen muscles as it increases cardiovascular capacity.

This method of training was first introduced in the late 1950’s as an exercise routine to develop general fitness.  Circuit training was originally arranged in a circle, with resistance training exercises alternating between different major muscle groups. This is how the name «circuit training» came about.  In order to get the full benefits of circuit training, it is important to only rest from 30 to 90 seconds between stations, this helps to maintain the necessary heart rate to help improve your cardiovascular conditioning.

 

An example of a circuit training routine

 

Do as many push ups as you can for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.

Do as many squats as you can for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.

Do as many sit-ups as you can for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.

Do as many lunges as you can in 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.

Do as many lat pull downs as you can in 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.

 

The fast pace and constant changing nature of circuit training, places a unique type of stress on the body which makes it different from most conventional exercise activities, such as weight training alone or aerobic exercise alone.

 

Circuit training combines these two, to bring you the full benefits of both in half the time.

 

Circuit training prepares the body in an even and «all round» way and it’s time efficient, especially for those who cannot perform one hour workout due to scheduling.

If you are starting to workout pace yourself and start with simple movements and light weights. Circuit training is meant to challenge both, your muscles and your heart in order to strengthen them; to achieve this you should keep the movements simple but at a fast pace. Circuit training is a great and fun way to get in top shape and it is highly recommended for people who are looking for a dynamic exercise system.
